Pesticide is a vital input for increasing the crop production in Punjab. Approximately 6400 m.t.(Technical) of Pesticides is consumed annually. Efforts are being made to reduce the indiscriminate use of Insecticides on crops.

Flying squads have been constituted at Block, District and State Level to check the quality of various insecticides / fungicides and weedicides and also to implement the various provisions of Insecticides Act, 1968.

Permission for Sale/Exhibit/Stock of Pesticides in the State

Any manufacturer, who intends to sell his products for the first time in the State, has to obtain the permission from Director of Agriculture, Punjab. Such permission remain valid till the validity of the manufacturing License which is again renewed on renewal of manufacturing License and documents required for the purpose are listed.

Punjab is a sub-tropical State which has extreme weather conditions with severe cold during December-January and scorching heat during May-June.Thus climate of Punjab is not conducive for the optimum growth of sugarcane crop as the active growth of the crop is restricted to only four months from July to October after which drop in temperature induces sugar accumulation and ripening. But, even though the
climatic conditions for sugarcane cultivation in Punjab are not as conducive as in tropical areas, yet sugarcane has emerged as an important commercial crop.

Dangerous Machines (Regulation) Act 1983

The Dangerous Machines (Regulation) Act (DMRA 1983) has been enacted to provide for regulation of Trade and Commerce in production supply, distribution and use of product of any industry manufacturing dangerous Machine, to the welfare of the labourers operating any such machine and for payment of compensation for death or bodily injury suffered by any labourer operating such a machine.

Ground Water Resources

Hydrogeologically, the state of Punjab can be divided into three zones namely Kandi Zone (Sub-mountainous), Central zone (Central Plains of Punjab) and South-West (SW) Punjab (Plains in SW Punjab). Installation of tubewells in the Kandi Zone of the state is difficult due to its sub-mountainous topography, occurrence of boulders and deep water level conditions. The average depth of the tubewells wherever possible is about 150m or so. Cumulative thickness of the water bearing aquifers in Kandi Zone is comparatively poor. In central Punjab aquifers occur at shallow depths. By and large the groundwater quality in this zone is fit for irrigation purpose.

Propagation of Zero Tillage Technology for Wheat in Punjab

Keeping in view the concerns expressed about the sustainability of the Rice Wheat system being practiced by the farmers in the State, Department of Agriculture, Punjab took up a programme of propagation of Resource Conservation Technologies especially Zero Tillage for sowing of wheat. Zero Tillage allows early and timely sowing of wheat crop and reduces the cost of production through lesser use of fossil fuels and herbicides etc. In Zero Tillage, crops are planted with minimum disturbance of soil by placing the seeds in a narrow slit 3-4 cm wide and 4-7 cm deep without land preparation.
